Designing With Web - Part 3 : Week 1
"Reinvent career guidance experience for students based on gaming"
Group 90
Project 1: A guidance test RPG
Context
The concept of this game is simple : it is a role-playing game using a personality and orientation test for students to discover career guidance in a different way.
Who ? Where? When? Why ?
- This is a game designed for students to be guided in their career.
- Students can play this game at home at any time on their smartphone or laptop. It may also be proposed on schedule in some schools, in an interactive room, as a full-fledged career counseling program. We think schools could be interested by this ludic program.
- The issue today is that career guidance is seen by many students as a constraint. They have to make an appointment and confide in an adult, who may not understand them, it can be intimidating… Our aim is to make it entertaining ! Come play with "nom de l'appli" in order to discover your path, in a more playful way than an interview with the guidance counsellor.
Target
For whom?
We would like to target students from secondary school to higher education. They usually are between 16 and 25 years old. However, this device can also be used, on the fringes, by adults seeking professional reconversion.
- Students in the secondary school usually have little idea of what they want to do when they grow up. Sometimes they have a vague idea of a business line, but they don't know why or what they are interested in in this sector. Students of this age often hear about big concepts such as marketing or finance without knowing how to define them. This is why this game is dedicated to them. First, it assures them to be able to choose a path corresponding to their behaviour and personality. Second, they may have concrete examples and definitions of big notions. It's a perfect example of the famous "Learning by doing" of Arrow.
- Students from universities and colleges are already oriented in specific areas : our game also allows them to discover a particular field, to be sure to be well-oriented too.

what? how?
Everybody knows how it is boring to have a rdv with a guidance counsellor. They are oftenly more enclined to hold small talks with their colleagues drinking cofee, or barely able to guide you using informations about the labor market from the 1980's.
How lucky you are when they give you a paper sheet in order to take a guidance test, most of the time extracted from ONISEP website, that are biased and meaningless even if they are funny. Things must be changed.
We choosed to reinvent career guidance thanks to the elaboration of a guidance test RPG.
Our game aims to analyse the player behavior through a large variety of in-game situations. Namely, the algorithm will be able to collect data about the player, based on his avatar decisions, behaviors, way of solving problems or interacting with others in the map, etc. The scenario will be evolutionary in order to make the scope more specific and more narrow, to test the user deeper in his personality each time. At the end of the game, our algorithm can offer a detailled and meaningful analyse of the player personality, so it could make the most trustable and inspiring career guidance diagnosis that we ever seen.
You easily understand why a paper guidance test is totally biased :
The diversity and the number of questions asked are insufficient
Written questions introduced several bias
Our ego prevent us to be perfectly honnest while describing ourselves
What we want is to make the player acting in the game as he probably would have done in real life. Our algorithm will be able to make sense to the way the player is embodying his avatar.
We already thought to different additional contents that could make the game more interesting :
the opportunity to upload and to work on your own CV
the game deliver you a reference code ( depending on what we did during the game, for what sectors you seemed to be passionated, etc ) which will be meaningful for recruiters
your game experience would be valuable in your CV
you can gain experience points by making researchs about a job, or by doing an internship
we can extend the game, with an online mode, to a new and innovative working social network where recruiters and job seekers will be able to meet each other and to exchange then
We are convinced that our proposal will be enjoyed by our target audience and will be profitable for the whole society, particularly by modernising career guidance, but also the entire labor market and the recruitment methods. We have to adapt to our times, and our project is here to start the transition.

Concurrents, relative projects and how they inspired us
- MaTHiSiS: This is a project made by the European Union. This is an educational platform dedicated to all type of learner, usable from a computer or a smartphone. It offers a personal experience to learn skills related to
the expectations of everyone. But, there is not that part of recreational activities that we have, and this project is not well-known among students.
- Orientoi: This could be a concurrent too. Indeed, it analyzes the personnality of the gamer and then it offers programs according to the choices made by him. Furthermore, few different games are available on the website. But, the difference is that Orientoi is only focused on people aged between 12 and 19 and we want to develop our idea to all students, even those who are more than twenty years old.
- MeTycoon
: this game is similar to our, indeed, the user has to create a character and then he will be able to discover a lot of information concerning career guidance. But, the fact that it is especially for young people and it is only available in English, whereas we want to develop it in other languages reveals a difference with our project.

- Positive effects of serious games
:A lot of articles explains that games are good for very young people, but, this article shows us how serious games could be very useful for students. The fact that serious games that can be developped thanks to video games are useful for students motivated us.

Project 2: Virtual business immersion
Context
when? where? who? why?
The concept of this game is to allow students to make up their mind about their career guidance thanks to the immersion in professional world with VR glasses.
- It would be useful during the research of the career guidance of students.
- Physically the student is at home but virtually he/she is in a professional environment (a company, an activity area).
- People concerned by this game are students. However, professionals and companies are also concerned because they are showing their work environment and can be in relation with some students.
Today, there is a big issue regarding professional orientation because orientation methods don't really evolve through time to adapt to the evolution of society, especially concerning the digital area. So, the aim of this game is to allow students the discovery of a professional environment in a new way. It is much more concrete and then it will be easier for them to be aware if they are enjoying this professional area or not.
Only by using VR glasses, they will be in a new place, maybe their future professional place.
Target
for whom?
The idea is to reach students from 16 to 25 years old. At the end of high school and when they are entering university, their outlooks about jobs are blurred. They have just heard about some notions but nothing is really concrete. If we take the example of business schools, they may have heard about finance, marketing or management but they don't really know what is behind these notions
More precisely students at secondary school but also at high school. In fact, it may be interesting for this two segments to discover the environment of a company:
For the secondary school students, they are looking for the professional area they would like to study, so it may be interesting for them to discover the conditions of working of this area.
For the university students, they are looking for the profession they would like to do in a company, so it may also be interesting for them to discover different professions into a specific professional area.
The offer is answering the need of the student to have much more concrete information about the career guidance and the professional world. It is no more only words, it is also images, movements, immersions, reality and discovery. Then, they could make up their minds easier. As a result, their choices of career guidance may be correctly justified.
Service offered
what? how?
In an evolving global workplace, it is increasingly important for graduates and school-leavers to possess an understanding of the job market, their relevant skills, and career progression paths.
However, a survey conducted by CREDOR for the Cnesco reveals the importance to improve the support of students in the identification of their personal tastes and the connection with professions and professional areas. Since students are placing in first place the definition of their personal tastes, of their real motivations, they think that they have not much support about this point.
Also, they would like more information about professions, including with meetings between students and professionals.
Thanks to this game, the students are allowed to discover different professional environments with VR glasses. The companies that the student can visit will depend on the sponsorings that we will obtain, but we can already think about some professional environments :
Hospital
Industry
Construction and public works
Bank
Shops
Engineering
IT
...
- → To be immersed up to the hilt, when the student is moving in the house, he/she may change of professional area or of profession.
- → During the immersion, the student may be solicited to realize some actions of a particular profession, as if the student was in internship.
- → As we will be in relation with various companies, this experience may be valorized on some CV. Moreover, the game may allow to create a meeting between a student and a professional to have more information about professions or the company and maybe to join them.
- → We also thought about a system of grades and hard skills developed by students thanks to this experience and they could mention those hard skills in their applications: companies will know that they have some reliable skills.
- → The students could do a location of the product at school if they do not have the means to buy it to respect the equality in education. We can also propose some rooms at school where the VR glasses will be available and where the students could try it during their free time.
- → They will take some important decisions and see virtually the consequences of their actions.
The aim of these services is to restore confidence in career guidance for students and to stop the idea of this step as a constraint.
Furthermore, the students may gain in confidence in their professional choices and be less stressed about it. Because we never know if the way we have decided to take is the right way.
